Final Project on Growing up

Growth, Slow and Steady:
An Essay on Growing Up
An Essay by Gaelen Frink

April 20, 2011

Growing up is something we do everyday. We learn new things, things to do things not to do. We also learn knowledge everyday at school and every time we learn something we grow up a little. There is also growth in Romeo and Juliet as well as in To Kill a Mockingbird. Growing up can be shown and wrote about in many ways. I show growing up in a grocery list, a letter to Juliet from Romeo, a thank you letter to my childhood, and a book cover for To Kill a Mockingbird.  Growing up is never straightforward there are obstacles in life that you have to hurdle and these make you stronger and help you grow.
******

A grocery list on growing up
·        Two pounds of prunes for courage to step up to challenges in  life
·        Three quarts of chocolate for love so you have a piece of love in your life for other people
·        An ounce of chili powder for anger and hate so you can have more feelings than love
·        Ten pounds of assorted fruits and vegetables for strength for doing the heavy lifting in life
·        Twenty energy drinks so you have energy to do things in life
·        Eleven pounds of sugar so your life is sweet
·        Nine gallons of milk so you can have strong bones
·        Four lemons for some sourness in life to contrast the sweetness of the sugar
·        Six ounces of envy and jealousy
·        Five to twenty pounds of knowledge of yourself and the world around you so you are not blind of what is happening in the world and n yourself
·        One gallon of maturity so your personality can change
·        Six feet of growth so you look like you have grown up
When all of these things and others are combined you are growing up. However growing up is a slow process so it doesn’t happen all at the same time. Even though you want to grow up quickly you might regret this in your later years when you wish you were younger and could do the things you used to be able to do. Here is a quote on growing up “Growing up is never straightforward. There are moments when everything is fine, and other moments where you realize that there are certain memories that you’ll never get back and certain people that are going to change. And the hardest part is knowing that there’s nothing you can do except watch them.” Alden Nowlan

Dear Juliet,
I am growing up, but yet I do not want to because I am not growing up with you. When we grow up I hope that we can be together forever. The situation we are in is tough one, and I do not know if we will be able to grow up or not. When you grow up your father will make you marry County Paris, but this is not what I want because this is set up love and we fell in love. A few days ago I was locking myself into my room and creating a fake night, and in the night I would go outside and cry my heart out. This has all changed with growing up a little and going to a party. When I was at this party and I realized that all I needed was to fall into love and grow and I did this by meeting you. Fair Juliet we must grow up together or else our personalities will change and we might not love one another anymore. Please we must grow up together.

Love,

******

Dear Childhood,
I would like to thank you for all of the fun and happy times we have had together. Even though all of the times weren’t happy and fun I feel like our years together are irreplaceable because I will never have experiences like those childhood ones again. I will never have the no fear, daredevil feeling again, or the feeling of invincibility. When there are good times there are also bad times. Feelings of anger, hate and dislike are still here. The feeling of love is also with me. So don’t worry that I have lost everything from those childhood years. Another thing I still have with me is all of the memories I accumulated over all those years, and some days I will remember one and a smile will come on my face. Alas we must part because I am a teen and even though those childhood years are still with me I am creating new years, the teen years. Thank you again childhood and goodbye.

Sincerely,
Gaelen Frink

To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird has many themes and one of those is growing up. One big moment that is throughout the book is the physical growing up. Jem turns twelve and Scout turns 10 in the book. There is also the mental growth or maturing. Jem when he first got his gun he shot the birds with it, but when Scout was going to kill a pill bug he wouldn’t let her do this. Dill also has to grow up because of his parents. This is because he has to figure out things about his parents like do they love him or do they just buy him things and then don’t pay attention to him. Another theme in To Kill a Mockingbird was the theme of circles because everything seemed to happen and then come to a close in seemingly a circle. Sometimes these circles happened twice. Growing up happened in a circle.

Essay Number 13

True Love Built up or Fallen Into:
An Essay about Building up True Love
An Essay by Gaelen Frink
Eighth Grade English
Pine Point School
April 20, 2011
When you think about love you always think of how it happens in the movies, but love like that doesn’t last, but when you build up love this love lasts and this is called true love. When I am older I believe I will have to build up my true love because when I see a captivating girl I do not immediately love her because I have not built any love with her. Also, a couple that I know that truly loves each other is my parents and there are many reasons why. Love is a tricky subject, but when used with care love can be wonderful, but this love must be built up because if it isn’t love won’t last.
Love has to be built up until it reaches the point of true love for you cannot fall into true love. When you talk about true love many people do not have a Romeo and Juliet case of falling into love, people forge this love. Sometimes people have known each other for a long time and already know many things about each other. Since you already know many properties about this person, this takes care of the unpleasant moments in your relationship. Real love will probably happen to me by, building this love up, constructing trust inside of my love and reaching the high point of true love. Even when you see someone who is captivating you do not love them because you do not know their personality. You need to build up your friendship with them and learn about this person before you can say you love them. Love can’t be made or fallen into; love must be built up, and then once love is constructed this love can only be called true love.
A truly loving couple that I know is my parents and even though they seem to have fallen into love they are still a truly loving couple. A reason that I think that my parents are a truly loving couple is because they are still together and not divorced even though 50% of couples get divorced these days (Mr. Salsich). I also think that even though they have bickered before these fights actually can make a truly loving relationship stronger than it was before. I also think a testament of their true love is that they have been together for 19 years. If they have been together that long they are obviously still in love because they wouldn’t still be together if they didn’t love each other. My parents are an example of falling into love this proves that love can be formed many different ways and this is one way. Even though they fell into this loving relationship, lasting years, withstanding the many fights accumulated over the years they are still together not separated and staying contented together. My parents love each other deeply and will continue to love each other until the end of their lives because they are in a truly loving relationship.
Romeo and Juliet fall into love when they see each other for the first time and this is much different than the real world because we have to build our love. Love must be built until it reaches the highest point of love and only at this point can this love be called true love. My parents truly love each other because they are in true love, and I hope they continue this love for many more years. Love in its many different forms can be love but not true love because building love only creates true love.

Self Assessment

1.      An issue in my writing that I am still working on is my transition words from sentence to sentence because some of my chunks jump from one another without a word in between.
2.      A strong point that I see in this piece of writing would probably be my concluding sentence on my first body paragraph because I think that this sentence really sums up the paragraph.
3.      A weak point I see in this piece of writing would probably be my redundancy in my intro second body paragraph and my conclusion.
4.      I would give my self a C+ - B- for this essay.

14 Line Sonnet

Friendship is like a plant ever growing
You only get out what you put into it
You need to take care when you are sowing
And during this friendship you need a wit
The best friendships sometimes last very long
Lasting friendships need to learn to endure
Hopefully you can see your friends lifelong
During the enduring time friendships mature
When I am feeling down and I am blue
I turn to my friends for a bit of help
They sometimes pick me up from where I lie
This will help us stick together like glue
This also means they answered my cry for help
This means our friendship will get to Shanghai

    Food is like:
An Essay about Metaphors Related to Friendship
    An Essay by Gaelen Frink
    Eighth Grade English
    Pine Point School
    April 18, 2011
Metaphors are everywhere, sometimes hidden from the careless ear, but some can be discovered by any who hears them, and my metaphors on friendship are those kind. Metaphors on friendship to me are like different foods. Foods come in billions of different kinds, flavors and also sizes. Friends are like food.
For everyone who knows me, they all know that I love food, so it is only natural that I relate my essay on friendship to different foods. The first food that seemed to relate to some of my friends is chocolate because chocolate is a quick pick me up. Chocolate is like a friend because it can help you when you are feeling down. Once you have chocolate you can get a little hyper and energetic from the sugar buzz and, this is a big difference from how you were feeling before, but chocolate can also help you indulge in life. Another food I was able to relate a friend to was friendship is like an Oreo. While I am the inside, the filling, my mate, Charlie, is the outside, the two cookies. I find an Oreo to be like friendship because this friend surrounds me and helps me when I am lost. Lastly I can see friendship like pizza with all of the toppings. I can see this because I would be the crust and if I was the crust I would be supporting everything else on top of me, holding up the sauce and the cheese, supporting the pepperoni and sausage and bearing the weight of all of the vegetables. This is the other side of friendship where you help your friends by helping them feel better or keeping their spirits up because you support them. Friends can have many different disguises or ways to be described, but in the end they are all the same, thoughtful, caring and just good old friends that you have known for a long time.
Metaphors are everywhere, different types and different meanings, but some can mean the same thing, but under a different cover. I connected friendship with food, but you could connect friendship with many other things like flowers, a tree and literally anything else. Friendship is like food it can be related to any type. Friendship is like chocolate, an Oreo and a pizza.

    Self Assessment
    1.      One writing issue I am continuing to work on is my use of commas because I think I have a few unnecessary commas in my writing.
    2.      One strong point I see in this essay is my long sentence because it really helps explain that chunk.
    3.      One possible weak point I see is that I might not have enough details to back some of my chunks.
    4.      The grade I would give myself would probably be a B- to a B

    Perplexed Teens:
An Essay about Problems Faced by Teenagers
    An Essay by Gaelen Frink
    Eighth Grade English
    Pine Point School
    April 6, 2011

Teens or teenagers here in Stonington, in the US and in World face many problems throughout their life, but the teen years are especially problematic. In the year 2011 some problems faced by teenagers could be anything, but I thought that the problem of parents getting divorced was a big problem because so many parents get divorced these days. A problem that I face time and time again is the lack of free time, and this problem doesn’t leave me much time to do what I want to do.  Teenagers of 2011 face many problems and I as a teenagers have my share of problems.
Teenagers face many problems on a whole host of topics from trouble with bullies to your parent’s divorce. One problem between an older and younger sibling can be, sibling rivalry. This rivalry can be bodily disagreements like punching, hitting, wrestling and kicking, but this rivalry can also be verbal abuse where these two siblings insult one another, and call each other mean names until one gets too hurt by what the other said, and he/she falls apart and cries from sadness. Not only is this fighting bad for these two siblings, but this is bad for the whole family from the stress of breaking up struggles. Another problem teenager’s face is the possibility of their parent’s getting divorced or splitting up. When your parents get divorced, a declaration dissolving a marriage, this disconnects the family and this forces the teenager to live at two homes. If one of the parents finds a new partner the teenager then has to learn to accept and welcome this new person into the family. One problem some teenagers face at school or other places is the problem of bullying.  Bullying is an issue throughout the country and probably in the world. The bullying dilemma has many forms, cyber bullying, physical bullying and emotional bullying, even though there are many forms they are all equally bad. Some teenagers face one big problem in their life, like their parents divorce, while other teenagers face many small problems.
In my teen years and years before I have faced a few struggles. One being a younger brother to an older brother means many things for me. Sometimes he can be looked up to and I really admire him. On the other hand at other times in my life he can be very mean and very quick to punch me, but when I punch him back I get blamed and in trouble. Another problem is no free time sometimes then lots of free time on other nights. This could be from the increase of homework from lower to middle school because we went from half an hour to an hour of homework to three hours, and this leaves us no free time, but on some nights we barely have anything to do. So sometimes one wishes we didn’t receive so much homework so we could do more of what we want to do. Another problem I sometimes face is the problem of insulting and aggravating comments. Sometimes people will insult the way I look or the way I do things and sometimes they even make fun of what I say. While some of these comments I don’t take, but the other comments hurt me deep inside, but it doesn’t show at least not sometimes. Sometimes I only realize what people have said until I stop and think about what was said. My problems may be petty to some people, but to me they are important, these are my problems as a teenager in 2011.
When you think of being a teenager when you are young you think that it will be great because you will have so much freedom, but this freedom is taken away by your problems. From the problems of 2011 teenagers divorce is probably the biggest to me, but there are many other problems other people face that some people don’t even know about. Many people don’t know about some of my problems but that is the way I like to keep it. Problems, everyone faces them teens face many because these are the self conscious years, but teens face many.

    Self Assessment:
    1. Thing writing issue I am continuing to work on is the problem of using unnecessary words. This is a problem because it makes some sentences awkward.
    2. A strong point in this essay is my long sentences which help compliment my writing by the way they flow.
    3. A possible weak point I see in this essay is the problem of using too many commas where they don’t belong.
    4. A grade that I would give myself would be a B to a B+.

    Homelessness and Me
My Work at the WARM Shelter and My Research
    An Essay by Gaelen Frink
    Eighth Grade English
    Pine Point School
    March 5, 2011

Did you know that around 3.5 million people are homeless, and in Rhode Island 51 percent of homeless suffer from first time homelessness (Homelessness)? For my work for the assessment I worked at the WARM shelter; for work I served meals. I also conducted research on the topic of homelessness. I related To Kill a Mockingbird to my work in many different ways. This experience at the WARM shelter has changed me in many ways and I will never forget what I did.
I chose my site, the WARM shelter; because I thought it would be interesting to serve food to homeless people. I also chose my site because most of the places we could volunteer at were in Connecticut, and there were not that many in Rhode Island. Of the sites in Rhode Island very few of the hours worked with my schedule. Another conflicting variable was that I could not work on the weekends because I go skiing every weekend. One of the places I thought I could go to was the animal shelter because I have a dog and I like working with cats and dogs. I thought this would be a good place to work because it is in Rhode Island and close to my house.  Another place in Rhode Island I could have gone to would be the Nursing homes because there are many of those in Westerly, but I was not interested in the topic of elderly people. I actually went to the WARM shelter to set up some times to volunteer, but the coordinator, Joy Cordio was not there. I was finally able to get a hold of Joy after many phone calls to her and many missed calls from her. I was nervous at first of volunteering at the WARM shelter, but now I really enjoy going there to volunteer. Getting a place to volunteer was definitely a roller coaster because getting a place to volunteer had its ups and downs.
While volunteering at the WARM shelter I experienced many challenges physically and mentally. At first I just came into the kitchen through the battered old door and served food to the clients, and then I left after my hour was up. I am now friends with the clients and the chef, Zig and, the clients want me to keep volunteering. I had so much fun that I will continue to volunteer at the WARM shelter because I liked volunteering so much. Another challenge I experienced was one time I was serving and one of the items of food was running low because I was serving too much to each person. So I had to as Zig says “Give a little less to each person so that the food will last.” Doing what he said I was able to make the food that I served to10 people serve 20 people. Once when I came into the shelter I did not see Zig at the counter preparing food, but two people from OLV, Our Lady of Victory. They told me that “We don’t need you and we do this every first of the month.” I explained to them why I was here and that I needed to do this for a school project, even though they didn’t need me I did most of the serving. I encountered some problems or challenges, but I worked through all of them.
During the time that I served I accomplished many things and I really felt like I helped someone. One of the things that I accomplished was that I served food to people who really needed a meal and needed to eat. My doing this made it so people who weren’t going to have a meal that night received one and ate instead of going hungry. I also served a meal to a thirteen year old girl who came in with her mom because she did not have any food to eat; I had seen this girl’s mom before but not her so they must not of had any food at their home. Another thing that I accomplished was finding things to do. Even though doing nothing sounds like fun for some people it was not fun for me. Sometimes at the beginning of the month people are scarce because they just received their food stamps and do not have to come into the WARM shelter for their meal. So sometimes I would have to find things to do. Another challenge that I accomplished was the problem of serving too much; this is a problem because a certain food will run out too quickly and not everyone will receive food. If I encountered this problem, which I did; I would have to make each serving to the people thereafter smaller so I could serve everyone else who came in for a meal. After I figured out how to make the portions smaller I felt like I accomplished making the meal last, but I also felt like someone went home hungry. After I was done serving it really I felt like I accomplished something and did something good for someone else.
While researching homelessness I learned a great deal about the topic that I did not know.  One of the sources I used was the Rhode Island coalition for the homeless, and this gave me many good statistics on homelessness in Rhode Island. One of these statistics was eighteen percent of homeless people in Rhode Island suffer from chronic homelessness; chronic homelessness is a homeless person with a disabling condition and has been homeless for a year or more or has been homeless four times in the past year. I also learned that 41 percent of homeless people in Rhode Island are women and 59 percent of homeless people in Rhode Island are men (Homelessness). Some people have thought of ways were there can be portable housing for homeless people. One of these ideas is where there is a clear or white plastic round bubble that the person lives inside of and, the bubble is inflated with the exhaust from the heating of a building. Another idea is to have a suit where inside there is a cot built into the suit; to use one simply gets inside and zips up the suit and then to get out they unzip; this idea is designed for mass amounts of homeless people because the suits do not take up much room (Sample). While researching I came upon a type of homeless people called mole people; mole people are people who live underground in tunnels or caves. In Las Vegas there are around 700 people who live in underground tunnels; some these tunnels have water in them because of waste water from construction. Of the people featured in the article some of the people live there because the police don’t bother them and, this is good because some of the people have warrants for their arrest (Samson). While researching I found out many things that I did not know about homelessness and so now I understand how and why it happens to people.
During English class we have been reading To Kill a Mockingbird and I was surprised to think about how To Kill a Mockingbird and the topic of homelessness have things in common. In To Kill a Mockingbird the topic of loneliness is a big part of the book because there are many references to it. When Dill runs away he did this because “[his parents] weren’t interested in [him].” and this made him feel unloved. It seems like some the clients that come in seem lonely and this is probably because some of them are all by themselves. At another point in the book Jem and Scout have the treasures that they find inside the tree. They make it seem like these are the most precious things that they own. The people who come in for food and live at the WARM shelter are also like this; the people who live at the WARM shelter have their own personal belongings that are only theirs and no one else can touch them, and when the people come in for food the food is their treasure and they guard it. The last thing that I see in common with To Kill a Mockingbird and homelessness is the topic of friendship. To Jem, Dill and Scout friendship is one of the big things that they hold dear to themselves. To the people at the WARM shelter everyone knows everyone and they are always joking and talking amongst themselves. Like the moral never judge a book by its cover if you thought about it quickly you never would think that the WARM shelter and To Kill a Mockingbird would have anything in common; luckily I did not.
If I was able to do the volunteering part of the assessment differently I would change a few things, but not that many. One thing I could have done differently was go on the weekends. If I was to do this I would have met the other cook and talked with him and heard his experiences. If I went on the weekend I also might have seen a different crowd of people instead of the ones I would usually see, and I could have seen if these people were different from the ones I usually see. At the end of January this part of the year is always busier than the other months because people are running low on food stamps because they got them early for Christmas. If I had served at the end of January I also would have served more meals which would have helped more people and I would have been busier longer. I also would have seen more people and some of those people might only come in if they really needed help, but they wouldn’t look like that. The last thing that I would have done differently would be to talk to more people. I talked to Matt, Zig and the woman who always comes in late. I could have talked to different people though, and found out about their experiences of homelessness and how it has affected them. A few things would be different, but I am quite content on how I conducted myself and the things that I did.
Experiences change the way we do things; if we have a bad experience of something we are likely to not do that again, but if we have an exceptional experience we are likely to do what we did again. This project has changed my view on homelessness because I now understand it.  I learned that the homeless people are just people who had something bad come upon them and this rendered them homeless. This could be something a small as a little tiny mistake where you forgot to pay your rent and you get kicked out and you are now homeless. I now know more about some of the types of homeless and how it happens to them. Some of the people who are homeless are drug addicts and while there are a few most are not. On the other hand some people suffer from chronic homelessness and cannot get back on their feet. I now recognize the homeless people in my town, Westerly. While going around town I have seen some of the homeless so I now know who they are. I also am not as nervous around the WARM shelter as I used to be. With my service I learned about homelessness and homelessness in my town; it is amazing what this project did and showed me.
Homelessness is something that should be ended and soon, but in the mean time people can help out homeless by donating money food and time to help the food banks and shelters because if we all do this we can help to end homelessness.  My time spent helping helped me realize ho w large of a problem homelessness is. The research also helped me realize how homelessness is a problem all over. Homelessness needs to be ended one step at a time whether it be you volunteering or becoming more knowledgeable on the topic of homelessness this is a problem.

    Visit Number 7

    Assessment Number Seven
     A Paragraph by Gaelen Frink
    Eighth Grade English
    Pine Point School
    February,
Today for serving I served turkey pot pie, soup and baked ziti. The ziti was hard to serve because of the way it was cooked. The ziti had a hard layer of cheese on top so I had to break through that to get to the actual pasta. Zig made two things of turkey pot pie, but we didn't even take the second one out of the oven because we didn't need it. He could have only of made one and that would have served everyone twice. This was because of the amount of people who came in to eat. It was like a whole different world than the one that I was in during January. Even though it might sound like fun to have nothing to do it was very boring and I would rather have 60 people than 13. Even though this was my last visit I still want to goo to the WARM shelter. I like seeing all of the people who come in and I am starting to become friends with them. The WARM shelter was the beat place for me to volunteer.
